How to buy a Bargain Breezer?

How to buy a Bargain Breezer?

I want a fast horse.

It’s what we all strive to do - the breeder sending his mare to his chosen stallion, the punter picking out his punt, the bloodstock agent seraching the sales grounds, the trainer developing his young stock, the syndicate bringing everyone together for a horse they all believe in. Fast, isn’t about flash. Fast is about finishing in a comparatively short time - it could be the Epsom Dash, it could be tomorrow’s Grand National. It doesn’t matter - we all want a fast horse.

The Tuesday Take: Our Cheltenham Challenge To Turn One Cent Into One Million

Sometimes your greatest adventures can happen without ever having to leave your couch. In fact, this adventure begins down the back of the couch with an old friend from pockets past, the humble one cent coin. A coin banned in Ireland for as it would quite possibly create too many millionaires with my fool proof plan. You really mustn’t share this article - it just would be boring if we all became millionaires. You see this one cent coin is going to to turn us all into millionaires this Cheltenham Festival. What could possibly go wrong? Here’s my one cent accumulator that pays €1m.

Mythical Power - Supreme Novice Hurdle

Tullyhill is a gazelle over a hurdle. Firefox is the Elliot bet of the week. No race of the week is analysed more and gets more hype than the Supreme Novice Hurdle. That’s why I think it’s best to side with the horse that keeps his best for the racecourse, not the chat at the Cheltenham Preview. By Galileo out of Annie Power, he’s bred so well I’m sure he knows where the Princess of Wales is. He’s declared in a first time hood and I think that can have a calming effect so he doesn’t over race in the hurly burly of the Supreme Novice. If he can relax, I think he could take after the best of Galileo’s progeny and be very difficult to find the bottom of even at Grade 1 level. One cent into 4.5 cent - it’s an easy game this.

Lossiemouth 4/6 - Mares Hurdle

It’s Red Bull against Haas in the Mares Hurdle here. But I don’t think we’d need Max Verstappen to steer this mare home, I might even do. Some people are obsessed by Taylor Swift or maybe Harry Styles, I’m obsessed with Great Pretender mares (we just announced a new one for syndication with Willie). From tiny crops, he’s the sire that has given us Benie Des Dieux, our own Grangee and now Lossiemouth. Not a mathematical bonanza but I think another winner on the board towards our quest for a million.

Eagle Fang 18/1 - Boodles Hurdle

The simple fact is that if Eagle Fang was trained by Willie Mullins or Gordon Elliot his odds would be halved. Three winners of the Boodles Hurdle have won the race at Naas he won well last time in the last six years and he remains perched at 18/1. That will do nicely.

Apple Away 8/1 - National Hunt Chase

The only Grade 1 winner in the field. I think she’ll love the marathon distance and Lucinda Russell knows how to get further improvement for extra distance in her horses. She hasn’t been very good this season but she also wasn’t seen to best effect last winter either. She can blossom in the spring again and keep the ball rolling for us.

The Yellow Clay 8/1 - Champion Bumper

Do yourself a favour - rewatch the Dublin Racing Festival Bumper. On the day, I had thought You Oughta Know was the main horse to keep on side the next day - I was very wrong on second impression. The Yellow Clay was almost on the knocked out on the canvas he experienced so much interference to come back and beat A Dream To Share last year’s winner was really note worthy. There isn’t a star this year but that might be because the star was not allowed shine the last day - he’s great value for us at 8/1.

Facile Vega 3/1 - Turner Novices’ Chase

I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him but perhaps he won’t need my push. It’s a 50/50 bet he does show up but what a horse when he does decide to put on his best shirt and bust our his moves on the big occasion - I think he’s my bet of the week the more I think about it.

Sire Du Berlais 16/1 - Stayers’ Hurdle

What more does he need to do to be respected ? Last year’s winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle is again being underestimated by the market despite his incredible festival record. With Irish Point being diverted to the Champion Hurdle and Monkfish heading to the Gold Cup, this is a weak race and Sire Du Berlais comes alive in the spring. He might now be 12 but he was very good when 11 last year, I think he can defy father time yet again. Do not go gentle into that good night, Sire.

Sina Nomine 14/1 - Foxhunters

A lovely play this lady. A winner last time out beating Bennys King by 15 lenghts, Benny Kings then went on to win immediately afterwards and record a RPR of 134. I really don’t think the Irish challengers are up to much so the value might be this progressive Saint Des Saint mare that doesn’t have the bright lights of a fancy trainer to hamper our price.

Coulstar 5/1 - Book Online @ DundalkStadium.com Handicap

Quivering at this moment with hundreds of thousands amassed from our humble penny. Surely Galopin Des Champs is the horse on Friday worthy to carry our hopes and dreams to land the million? Of course not, we head to Friday Night Lights at Dundalk and our very own Coulstar.

Look, I honestly do like her chances, she’s progressed for each extra furlong we have given her recording a career best last time when staying on for third at Dundalk. She finds a flat spot in her races and the logic is that extra distance may stop that happening. If it does, she can flash home in front for us at the generous odds of 5/1 (which I have magically created for myself)

€1,059,601.49 in our pocket. How could Ireland ban the penny when it solves the cost of living crisis?

Our Guide to Cheltenham 2024 by our Owners.

As veterans of our syndicate can attest, my tipping doesn’t always find that back of the net. That’s why we’ve done something new this year and created our guide filled with the best analysis of our our owners. There’s some really insightful takes making it well worth a look in your search for winners.

Last chance to own our 2024 jumps team

Cheltenham is a really busy time for us. Not only are we enjoying the racing but it’s also the moment when the majority of our jumps team sells out. As you can see below, we’re running low on stock but we do have some crackers left that will give bundles of fun. Our option to book a slot to chat with us before buying is proving really popular or if you’re ready to take the plunge before they sell out you can view our team below.

The Tueday Take: Hands off the Mares’ Hurdle

The Tueday Take: Hands off the Mares’ Hurdle

The doctor has scribbled his hurried prescription for a better Cheltenham Festival.

The Mares’ Hurdle, the Mares’ Chase and Mares’ Novice Hurdle should be converted into 0-150 mares-only handicaps (a lower bracket for novices). It’s a good idea at first glance. Have your best 150 plus mares compete in the marquee races with a 7 lb pound allowance. Create competitiveness through the magic of the handicapping system for all the remaining mares below the top rung.

The Tuesday Take: How to buy your first mare

The Tuesday Take: How to buy your first mare

I’d like to buy a mare.

A fleeting thought for many perhaps. Maybe you get as far as flicking through a breeding stock catalogue. Very few have the bravery to follow through. Gavin Boyle contacted Kevin Blake and myself this week and asked for help as he told us he’d like to buy his first mare. However,  it wasn’t a fleeting thought for Gavin. He traveled down from Lavey, Derry and returned with his first thoroughbred mare in his horse box. I thought it would be useful to tell the story of how we approached it and perhaps show that it’s possible for you too.

The Tuesday Take: A cure for racing's common cold?

It’s 1 am on Monday morning. I look at my phone.

A new owner I’ve never spoken to in Liverpool has found us on the internet and just bought shares in our Diamond Boy filly and our Jeu St Eloi filly. They join our WhatsApp groups right away. I text them - “Hi, I’m Jack. Thanks very much for the support, you’ve bought a share in two beautiful fillies there.” I hesitate but I pick my phone back up to write again before he replies - “You’re hardly watching the NFL as well are you?”.

He had backed the Kansas City Chiefs too.
